2012-04-21, Satisfied customers:I am a very seasoned traveller - and I have been to some of the Leading Hotels in the World, around the globe. I happened upon this hotel randomly, it was the only booking that matched my criteria and having no knowledge of resorts nor of Mexico, me and my mum and dad took a leap of faith and jumped on the plane. And let me just say, I am GLAD we did!!! Barcelo Maya Beach was EXCEPTIONAL. And I have high standards.The rooms were very clean, the service impeccable, the food was PHENOMENAL and I am a food freak. All the variety you can imagine: for veggie lovers, meat lovers, fish lovers, the desserts were fantastic and the breakfasts were especially good. The restaurants are also amazing. Can't remember now where we ate, but it was Christmas eve and all the waiters came out and brought us our meals all the same time in a silver dish and then TA-DA! Took off the lids to reveal the meals - it was the cherry on top of a very memorable evening. REASON TO RETURN: the beach, architecture and food. All the Barcelo hotels are connected on the Mayan Riviera strip so you can walk along and visit the other hotels: Barcelo Colonial, Barcelo Tropical, Barcelo Palacio etc. And I would highly recommend doing so. The architecture was stunning and very Mayan inspired. Beautiful to take pictures and to simply soak in. This is one of the FEW beaches in the whole of Mexico that actually has beautiful huge palm trees scattered all over the beach, so its not just one bare stretch of sand. It makes all the difference - you can pull a beach chair to be under a tree, but still very close to the water. The beach is also so long, that you can pull your chair all the way to the extreme end to be alone, in a quieter area. (I personally don't like being near the crowds, even though they look like they're having so much fun!) Not only that, but the sand is like white powder. It is so clean. I could rave forever and forever - I will say one thing: TIP YOUR WAITERS AND MAIDS. They work so freaking hard and Mayan people are some of the nicest and most soulful people you will every meet. TIP THEM! TELL THEM YOU LOVE THEM! Really, it makes them smile - they want nothing more than to know they are doing a great job and they really do appreciate the positive feedback. Don't think for a second about going anywhere else. It is slightly pricey, except for those last-minute deals (we lucked out in December) but it is MORE THAN WORTH IT.
